History and Formation of the Communist Party of China: Learning How to Govern Our Party

Abstract
Adapted from a lecture delivered at the Chicago Workers School, this article examines the historical development of the Communist Party of China through the lens of party governance, ideological formation, and organizational discipline. Drawing extensively upon Xie Chuntao’s Governing the Party: How the CPC Works, the article explores how the Communist Party of China transformed itself from a revolutionary movement rooted largely in the peasantry into a durable governing institution capable of maintaining political power over successive generations. Particular attention is devoted to the ideological struggles surrounding the Gutian Congress, where Mao Zedong argued that political education and ideological discipline were indispensable for transforming disparate social elements into a revolutionary vanguard. The article further analyzes the Communist Party of China's approach to historical continuity, focusing on contemporary interpretations of the Cultural Revolution and the principle that different stages of socialist development should be understood as interconnected rather than mutually negating. Additionally, the essay investigates the central role of anti-corruption campaigns, organizational accountability, and moral discipline in sustaining revolutionary legitimacy after the seizure of state power. Throughout, the author connects these historical lessons to the contemporary challenges facing the American Communist Party, arguing that ideological education, organizational discipline, political independence, and a mature engagement with historical experience are essential for constructing a viable revolutionary movement in the United States. The article ultimately presents the history of the Communist Party of China as a practical guide for understanding the relationship between revolutionary struggle, party governance, and the long-term maintenance of socialist political institutions.
