Where Deleuze Encounters Engels

Abstract

This article explores the overlooked theoretical convergence between Gilles Deleuze and Friedrich Engels through a critical examination of thermodynamics, energy, and materialist ontology. Focusing primarily on Deleuze’s Difference and Repetition, the study argues that Deleuze’s critique of the Second Law of Thermodynamics constitutes a profound intervention into Marxist debates concerning production, transformation, and the nature of material reality. By reconstructing Deleuze’s engagement with the concepts of energy found in the works of Friedrich Nietzsche and Sigmund Freud, the article demonstrates how Deleuze develops an ontology of intensive difference that opposes the entropic worldview of equilibrium, exhaustion, and decay. This perspective is then placed in dialogue with Engels’s critique of thermodynamic fatalism in Dialectics of Nature, revealing a shared commitment to understanding nature, labor, and social production as dynamic, self-transforming, and inexhaustibly productive processes. The article further contends that both thinkers recognized thermodynamics not merely as a scientific theory but as an ideological formation that naturalized bourgeois ideals of stability, identity, and equilibrium. Extending these insights into the contemporary period, the study applies the Deleuze-Engels synthesis to the ideology of artificial intelligence and information theory, arguing that contemporary computational capitalism reproduces thermodynamic assumptions by reducing thought, labor, and creativity to calculable and optimizable informational processes. Against this reduction, the article advances a materialist ontology of difference, becoming, and production that affirms the irreducible creativity of nature, intelligence, and human labor. Through this analysis, the essay presents Deleuze and Engels as unexpected allies in the development of a renewed Marxist critique of technology, information, and contemporary capitalism.
